Our History Our Humble Beginnings: 70's Back in the 70s, one of Civic’s current owners was engaged in the logging business, having just purchased two bulldozers directly from Japan. Little did he know such transaction would pose a problem later on, as there seemed to be no spare parts available nor any company around that offered after-sales services for units specifically bought from Japan. But as luck would have it, he was not the only individual who found himself in the situation. He found himself in the middle of an interesting business opportunity. Together with family, friends and former colleagues of his from the Mapua Institute of Technology, they established Civic Merchandising and began supplying spare parts requirements, and servicing units of Komatsu owners. Civic then started off, located in Paco, Manila. Fortunately for the group, their line of business did very well. Our Struggles: 80's From a spare parts supplier, Civic soon expanded to sell used construction equipment. But their first big break came in 1982, when Clark Michigan appointed Civic as its exclusive distributor in the country, which was followed by Bomag Compaction Equipment and Liebherr Bulldozer the year after. But while Civic bagged numerous business deals and awarded distributorship for several brands of construction equipment, the firm was not satisfied. What it ached for, its goal-was to be the local exclusive distributor of Komatsu. Their dream finally became a reality in 1988 and the future couldn’t be brighter Our Milestone: 90's In 1995, due to differences in management style, the majority stockholders decided to sell Maxima, Civic’s wholly owned subsidiary managing the Komatsu distributorship, to the minority block. Many of Maxima employees opted to leave the firm to join the majority shareholders in their next endeavor. This move was to revive Civic Merchandising. It was probably serendipity but at that time, Volvo Construction Equipment bought Clark Michigan, and re-appointed Civic as exclusive distributor. To prove to its business partners that they made the right choice, the firm quickly set into motion organizational changes-including the establishment of headquarters in Quezon City and a service shop and training center located five kilometers away. Setting up of sales offices in the prime provincial areas of Cebu, Cagayan de Oro and Davao immediately followed to ensure that Civic can cater to any customer-may it be in Luzon, Visayas or in Mindanao. The early part of the year was a struggle with Civic only carrying Volvo products, then little known locally. In 1996, Civic successfully closed deals with Ingersoll-Rand, Volvo Trucks and Schwing Stetter as the brands’ exclusive distributor in the country. This made Civic’s line-up of products formidable. And with aggressive sales and marketing campaigns, a dedicated sales team and support from its foreign partners, Civic soon realized success after success. Pushing Towards the Future: 21st Century Today Civic Merchandising is the exclusive distributor of leading names in construction and mining equipment worldwide, including Volvo of Sweden, SDLG and Sany of China, Doosan and Soosan of Korea, Power Pavers of USA. Forty years from its inception, Civic has grown from a three-man concern to a corporation of over eight hundred people. It has also expanded its area of coverage by adding more branch offices and service points nationwide. One of the company’s key strength is its commitment to provide superior customer service.
